Zaha Hadid Architects is set to design a new stadium for the Qatar FIFA World Cup to be held in 2022.
The modular 45,000 seat stadium will incorporate Islamic architectural elements to match one of the oldest inhabited settlements in Al Warkah – just south of Doha. The architects will be working with AECOM to deliver the scheme. The building’s modular second tier can be removed, slashing the total capacity to 25,500 seats depending on event requirements.
The stadium will act as an urban oasis complete with an aquatics center, a spa and commercial space. In addition, it will incorporate a host of cooling technologies and renewable energy to ensure that both athletes and visitors are kept cool during the summer months.
