UrbaCon Trading & Contracting (UCC) is on track to complete the Banana Island Village Resort & Spa by July or August, COO Glyn Thomas has told Construction Week Qatar.
The 12.9ha island, which is 1,100m long and 117m wide, is 3.5km due east of the New Doha International Airport, and 11km east of Doha itself.
“There are some additional works and changes … There will probably be some sort of soft opening between now and the end of the year,” says Thomas.
The total construction period is 18 months. “As you can imagine, there is a lot to do from a design-and-build point of view. We really only got the go-ahead on the concept in about mid-March [2012], so the detailed design itself took about four to five months.”
UCC MD Ramez Al Khayyat tells CWQ that this project is of particular significance to Qatar’s development as a regional tourist destination.
“Banana Island is the first of its kind in Qatar, the first island resort to be developed in this country,” said Al Khayyat.
